- The Australian state of New South Wales is set for a significant boost to its public network of EV chargers, with a major investment made from both government and CPOs.
- Backed by $16.1 million in government funding and $25.1 million worth of private investment, a total of $41.2 million will go towards installing 246 rapid and ultra-rapid EV chargers across 38 suburbs of NSW.
- The move is part of NSW’s longer-term goal of increasing levels of EV charging infrastructure, helping electric car adoption to naturally follow.
More EV chargers for New South Wales
The new 246 chargers will be installed by five EV charging firms, namely BP, Energy Australia, Plus ES, Tesla and NRMA, being placed across a diverse area of locations around NSW, including the state capital, Sydney. Furthering their sustainability aspect, all new chargers will run off renewable energy, making EV driving an even greener alternative for Australian drivers. The fastest chargers under these new installations will be capable of charging a typical EV from 10-80% in as little as 10 minutes. The NSW government notes that ‘many’ of the new chargepoints will be accessible for those with disabilities, while some of the charging bays will also be ‘pull-through’ bays – making it easier for EV drivers towing trailers and caravans to charge up.
Despite Australia being one of the top countries in the world for solar generation, making it the ideal place for greener EV driving, electric vehicle adoption has typically lagged behind European countries. However, investments such as these, along with new firms entering the Australian EV charging industry, should help inspire consumer confidence and supercharge EV sales.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Penny Sharpe, commented:
“Making charging faster and eliminating range anxiety are key to getting more EVs on the road in NSW. These charging stations will make it easier to charge EVs away from home, while also helping to reduce climate pollution.”
Member for Heathcote, Maryanne Stuart, added:
“I’m thrilled to see the Minns Labor Government investment in construction of a well-connected charging network across NSW. We are already seeing the benefits of NSW Government investment here in Heathcote where today I have cut a ribbon to celebrate BP’s newest EV charging station, making it easier for EV drivers to hit the road quickly.”
