IONNA partners with Wawa, reaching milestone of 3,000 contracted EV charging bays

  • IONNA, a North American joint EV charging venture between BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, has reached a milestone of over 3,000 contracted EV charging bays.
  • The achievement brings the firm closer to its goal of 30,000 charging bays online by 2030, with 212 bays already live across the country.
  • That number will now be boosted further thanks to a newly-announced collaboration with American convenience and gas station firm Wawa, which will see IONNA Rechargeries hosted on Wawa sites.

IONNA continues to grow the U.S. public charging network

Wawa has already been hosting EV charging at its sites since 2017, primarily with Tesla Supercharger units, but this marks the first time the retailer will host IONNA’s own ultra-rapid, 400kW-capable charging bays. The first of many ‘Rechargeries at Wawa’ is set to open next week, close to the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. Three more Florida-based charging locations are also currently under construction.

It’s not the first convenience retailer to host IONNA’s own charging bays, with the firm also recently partnering with Sheetz to bring Rechargeries to over 50 of its sites by 2026.

Backed by eight major OEMs, IONNA is becoming a significant player in the EV charging space. Without the need to rely on federal funding to expand its network of Chargeries, it’s continuing to grow despite the Trump administration’s efforts to freeze funding for public EV charging projects.

Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA, commented:

“We couldn’t think of a better way to achieve a key milestone than reaching it with Wawa, a host that allows our drivers to charge with ease and in comfort, knowing they’re being well cared for. Next week’s opening of the IONNA Rechargery at Wawa in Daytona Beach will bring our total bay count to 212 live and 3,064 contracted. That is over 10% contracted to our 2030 live bay goal in just over a year.”

Rich Makin, Chief Fuel Officer at Wawa, added:

“With an ongoing commitment to providing our customers with speed and convenience, our new collaboration with IONNA does just that. As we continue to expand our EV services, we are thrilled to provide our customers with a one-stop for fresh food, beverages and EV charging!”
